![]() I can do combos in a fighting game according to an internal rhythm, does that make it a rhythm game? I see what you mean, but let's imagine and look at it from another perspective, mainly from someone not familiar with the genre: you could apply that logic to other game genres too. TL DR If you can play your rhythm game on mute, it's not a rhythm game. And conversely, you don't even have to look at the screen because all of the cues are rhythmic and auditory in nature. Putting that game on mute and trying to play is impossible. The key to that game is keeping good INTERNAL TIME. ![]() The visual cues are scant, sometimes nonexistent, and sometimes try to intentionally throw you off. Most rhythm games seem to follow this format, with a heavy emphasis on visual cues and your response speed to those visual cues, leading to you "accidentally" playing a rhythm.Ĭontrast this with a game like Rhythm Doctor - the only true rhythm game I've ever played. And it doesn't mean it exercises the rhythmic "muscles" in your brain - which are very different than your visual response time. But that doesn't mean you are relying on any kind of internal timekeeping abilities whatsoever. It is true that, by paying close visual attention and lining up your button presses with what's on the screen, you will UNINTENTIONALLY be playing a rhythm. If your rhythm game can be played on mute, and even BETTER on mute in my case, then is it a rhythm game? My answer is no. That's because I was relying purely on visual feedback and I stopped approaching it like a rhythmic exercise. And you know what? I started playing BETTER. She said she wasn't keeping a beat in her head, tapping her foot, or using any other form of internal timekeeping.Īs an experiment, I put the game on mute. I asked how she played, and she told me she was just watching the note markers very closely and hitting the button when they appeared where they were supposed to be. But that's not what was going on, as evidenced by the following: At first, I thought maybe she just has better natural rhythmic abilities. She's also a musician, but she's been playing way less and hasn't put in the thousands and thousands of hours into practicing a musical instrument that I have. My girlfriend was kicking my ass in the game. I got the drum peripheral with it because I'm a longtime musician and I wanted to play the game to improve my rhythm and timekeeping. I've never posted here before but I recently had a thought that I wanted to share.
